Baptism 1898/99 Old Brampton - Charles E Hill
« on: Sunday 27 July 14 08:13 BST (UK) »
I am working on Charles Edward Hill who's birth is recorded in 1898 and who later died in the Great War. Have found a potential baptism on 7 Jan 1899 in Derbyshire, but with no confirmation of the actual location. My guess is that he would have been baptised at St Peter's, Old Brampton. I have the baptism records for that parish, but only as far as 1837.. Does anyone have access to later Old Brampton PR's which might help resolve this little mystery?

Are you certain you have y.o.b. correct??

If Charles Edward was b Old Brampton his birth should have been registered in Chesterfield reg district
There are no Charles Edward Hills reg in Chesterfield in 1898 (only a Charles Hill -no middle name)

Is this more likely to be his birth reg?
FreeBMD
Charles Edward Hill Jun qtr 1899 Chesterfield 7b 780

There is a baptism Derbys Charles Edward Hill 7 Jan 1900 parents James Edward & Florence Hill

There is a tree on A******y which gives Charles Edward Hill's d.o.b. as 16 April 1899
and baptism as 7 Jun 1900 St Peters Old Brampton

Might be worth checking out??

Hi Suz,

Thanks for checking for me, I appreciate it.

The baptism 7 Jan 1900 is the correct Charles. My error earlier, apologies! I have his parents from the records of his death in 1918 at Méteren in Northern France.

The baptism record refers only to Derbyshire though, and doesn't specify which parish. It is likely Old Brampton, but my digitised transcriptions don't stretch to this time period. I don't even know if the records are available without visiting the PRO, which is unfortunately not possible.

Charles Edward appears on several A******y trees, but none are sourced, which really doesn't help me with this issue ;)

Hi there

The 1901 census shows his birthplace as Old Brampton so it's possible that's where the baptism took place

Hi,

If you copy the film number i.e. 1752117 for this christening, then click catalogue near top of page.

When next page opens, click on Film/Fiche number enter the above number and click search you will be
shown a list of the churches in this collection:-

Items 1 - 4: Parish registers for Newbold, 1857-1954

Items 5 - 8: Parish registers for North Wingfield, 1569-1959

Item 9 - Parish registers for Ockbrook, 1630-1958

Item 10 - Parish registers for St. Thomas' Church, Brampton, 1832-1936

So would assume St. Thomas' Brampton is most suitable.

Thank you.

That does indeed narrow things down somewhat, and suggests that the most probable location would be St Thomas'.
The problem remains that St Thomas records for this period are not on line either, so there appears no means of confirming.
