Deciphering an occupation on a 1871 Bristol census.
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 03:36 BST (UK) »
Hi. Would really appreciate if someone could help me decipering an occupation as seen on a 1871 census taken in Bristol (St Philip & Jacob) for a "Samuel Aldin". The occupation is written on both the top line and the bottom line of my attachment, and looks like something-"Works" ??

Many thanks,

Scott.

Yes, definitely 'Labourer Iron Works' (shortened to Wks)

Thank you sami, Ruski, and Kay99 -

Yes I thought it may have been that, but the word "Iron" didn't look like it was written "Iron" ... I guess its just the way they used to write. Thanks again!

Scott.

Living in St Philips, they may well have worked at Lysaght's Iron Works in that area

Yes, thanks very much Steve; I managed to find something about this Iron Works (I am always amazed at what you can find on the internet!) but you have confirmed it. It's great because it ties-in with an article I found relating to my G-G-grandfather. Thanks again.
