Albert Gumma b1883 in the USA
« on: Friday 01 August 14 15:56 BST (UK) »
I have a 1911 census record for Albert Gumma saying he was born in the USA. It seems likely that with a good Cornish name he has returned to his roots.

Please can I ask if anyone can link me to his parents and ancestors?

Perhaps buying the marriage certificate would help?
Father's names will be on there!

December qtr 1909
Redruth district    vil 5c, page 399

Gumma, Albert
Northey, Mildred

And, maybe a brother?

December qtr 1909
Redruth district     vol 5c, page 457

Gumma, Leroy
Jory, Hetty

FreeBMD is showing births to both couples?
3 births to each couple after September qtr 1911, when Mother's maiden names were added.

Many thanks for the replies to my query.
Family Lore, I understand has the USA connection for Albert Gumma 1883.
The 1901 Census which lists him as a Gummow (Another common Cornish name) could be an Enumerator/literacy factor. Albert married as a Gumma in 1909 and his wife's maiden name is known in the family.
I thought it might be possible to trace Alberts father through Emily Pengilly mentioned in the 1901.
Can't place her or husband John Pengilly 1858 at all.
I haven't any access to USA records at this stage.
Still trying to avoid buying Alberts marriage documents!!!
Regards
Norman Elkins

In the 1880 census, there are Gummows recorded in various states, some of them in places that would attract miners [e.g., Pennsylvania and California].  You can look at many US records for free at FamilySearch:

Albert Charles's birth:

September qtr 1897
Liskeard district     vol 5c, page 46

Pengelly, Albert Charles

So a marriage should have taken place sometime before that?
