Rank Class Mark? another bit please
« on: Friday 01 August 14 22:40 BST (UK) »
I've got a 3 in 1 here.
I can make out he lost his rank due to drunkenness but what rank did he lose?
Is it Lance Stripe?
What is the word under Stripe?
Also on that one
The line under Charge Drunkenness?

He has an anchor and harp in his left forearm but what is the word above that?

and finally
What did he pass in Oct 1903? First class ?
and I can't make out the bottom line at all, I know it's tiny.

He got his rank back you'll be glad to know, I think the drunkenness was finding out his wife was pregnant, they had lost twins a year earlier, sadly this new baby wouldn't survive either.

Thank You anyone willing to have a go.

Under drunkenness  "finding guilty"

Word under stripe "corpl"  ?

Anchor and Harp...  Word above that "special?"

Qualified for corporal

Passed for rank sergeant   ?

Thanks conahy calling,
I'd never have got 'finding guilty' or special. I thought that was an A, didn't get close to an S.
I assume that Corpi word is short for Corporal.
I was thinking sergeant but the Passed for rank had me stumped.

Great to put more flesh on this man's name, I think my mother is the only person left who remberers him, he had no grandchildren and his grave is unmarked so I can't find it.

Deprived Lance Stripe – he may have been a Lance Sergeant and reverted to Corporal
In arrest….Corporal
Tried by District Court Martial
Charge drunkenness
Finding Guilty
Reduced in the ranks (ie to Private)
Returned to duty – the same day. So he was not confined to barracks/cells/prison

It should say elsewhere about his promotions up to Lance Sergeant.

In the marks I also think it says ‘special’ and the MO has drawn the mark/tattoo. An anchor often suggests he spent some time at sea.

He was obviously bright - passing 3rd, 2nd and 1st class Education certificates. Plus exams for promotion to Corporal and Sergeant. Shame about his drinking.

Thank you Ken,
That's great to have.
I need to study his record a bit more but I'm pretty sure that's the only bad mark against him.
All the writing is terrible and the focus is off but I've a much better chance of recognizing the ranks now.
I may need help again with this one.

He's climbing the ranks again while in France, but I'm struggling a bit again.
He's promoted to what on 19/1/15?
Acting ? perhaps
and on the 21/8/15 I thought maybe Acting Sergeant but he still has this rank in 1919 when he's discharged, you wouldn't hold a Acting rank in peace time would you?

Thank you
conahy calling
guess I should trust myself a bit more
still Acting Sergeant right up to 1919 seems a bit odd.
