Looking at the 1891 census, I see an Augustine POSTLE of the right age (also a William a year older). :)

In fact -

Births Dec 1885
POSTLE    Louis Augustine W        Rugby    6d   543
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Well done Geoff, you've cracked it  ;D. To confirm there is a Masters and Mates Certificate dated Feb 1910 for Augustine William Postle b. 1886 Kilsby on Anc. with the same number 040815 as appears on Nick 's record.

Added later - In fact there are 3 certificates dated 1908, 1910 and 1913
Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.
Warner & Loundes - Dudley/West Bromwich.
Dod(g)son - Heysham/Liverpool/Wolverhampton

Great news - at last the nut has been cracked.

Yes, as can be seen from the crew list he held a Master Steam Ship Certificate - it was quite normal for the Ch. Officer to hold a certificate above his rank.  I held a Master Foreign Going Certificate and sailed only as a Chief Officer, and never reached the dizzy heights of Master

Many thanks for that Geoff, maybe I can sleep tonight.

Jool - those certificates were probably his 2nd Mates, then Mates and finally his Masters., The time gap between the dates is about right. May I ask where your certificate info. came from.
