James Duff and Martha Dickman
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 14:20 BST (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with any of the following?

I have a James Duff, born 1822, Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, marrying Martha Dickman in 1862 at Cockermouth, Cumberland, England.

Martha Dickman was baptised at Ireby, Cumberland on 10 November 1833, daughter of a Marshall Dickman and Mary Cape.

James Duff and Martha had the following issue:

James Kenneth McKenzie Duff born 25 April 1865 Douglas, Isle of Man

John Marshall Duff born 16 October 1866 Edinburgh

Frederick Duff born 4 February 1868 Lesmahagow Lanarkshire

Mary Duff born 6 April 1869 Lesmahagow Lanarkshire

William Moyes Duff born 5 November 1871 Lesmahagow Lanarkshire

Euphemia Duff born 23 May 1873 Lesmahagow Lanarkshire

James Duff died between 1891 - 1901 as Martha is listed as Head of House in 1901, along with unmarried daughters Mary and Euphemia, and son John Marshall Duff.

Any help with possible marriages or deaths much appreciated! :D

No sign of Martha unless she remarried or went back to England.

Hi  :)

Could Dickman have morphed into DIXON? A possibility...there is a death on SP for a Martha DIXON/Duff born c. 1834 in the Glasgow area post 1901, when you have Martha last on the census (being lazy, haven't narrowed down year  :P).

If you hadn't seen, since DonM's note on James Duff's death, there is an entry in the Wills & Testament section of SP for him:

FACTOR, BLACKWOOD, LESMAHAGOW, D. 22/08/1893 AT BLACKWOOD AFORESAID, TESTATE...13 pages.

Type of document not indicated.

Its her Monica, 04 APR 1914 in Hillhead.  Her parents were Marshall Dickman and her mother written as Mary, previously Dixon ms Pape which I suppose could be Cape.  Her daughter Mary was the informant.

His obit is also available in the British News Paper Archive dated Thursday 24, August 1893.  As this was published in Evening Telegraph (Angus) there will be more entries.  A suggestion would be to hit the Glasgow Herald archives available on Google.
