At 11. p.m. the lights will go out in remembrance of the beginning of the Great War.

We will remember them.

The Great War

or shall we call it

the war of utter stupidity

There are several meanings of the word "Great".

I think Great in this instance means important or large rather than grand or excellent, so an appropriate word if you look at it's intended meaning, and consider the era in which the term was coined ....  :-\

Wiki says this:
From the time of its occurrence until the approach of World War II, it was called simply the World War or the Great War, and thereafter the First World War or World War I.[14][15]

In Canada, Maclean's Magazine in October 1914 said, "Some wars name themselves. This is the Great War."[16] During the Interwar period (1918-1939), the war was most often called the World War and the Great War in English-speaking countries.

I thought we were supposed to be turning the lights out for an hour at 10pm?

Thank you Ruskie-kiwihalfpint, much appreciated, but the tribute I stitched
was to the loss of so many.

I said to Hubby in later years it might end up in a house clearance or a rubbish dump.

Carol you are quite correct turning the lights out does start at 10 p.m. till 11 p.m
which is when the flame on the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey
will be extinguished at the exact time Great Britain declared War hence
my saying 11 p.m.

They did not go on again until the end of the 1st World War.

I will put out my candle at 11 p.m. after an hour of reflection.
