South African War Attestation Papers
« on: Friday 08 August 14 02:41 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,
I've just started to research my 2x great grandfather in the Boer War.  (British Army)  I'm having a very difficult time pinning him down, as his name seems quite common.  His name was William Arthur Graham, but there are several William's and Arthurs listed anywhere I've looked,  so I'm not able to figure out which one he is.  I'm wondering if there are attestation records available anywhere that might list his DOB, his wife's name, anything that might help me identify him.
Thanks,
Terri

Hi Terri,

Some information here about Boer War records:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/africanforces.htm

One of the resources mentioned is Ancestry's "Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949" which includes "medals awarded for British campaigns in Europe, India, Egypt, Sudan, South Africa, West and Central Africa, China, the Middle East, and elsewhere during the height of the British Empire."

There is a William A. GRAHAM listed there.

Findmypast also has Anglo-Boer War records 1899-1902.  As far as I know, they are transcriptions.
There is a William Allen GRAHAM listed, so it may be the same person as on the medal lists.  As you say, lots of William GRAHAMs.  Perhaps a temporary subscription will enable you to look through them all to find your man.

Debra  :)

There's a William Arthur Graham born Rotherham circa 1870, served in the Gordon Highlanders in the Boer War - might that be him?

Shaun J,
Thank you!!  I believe that is him!  I have his DOB as April 6, 1871 in Rotherham, and I know he served with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders.  May I ask where you found this info??

Debra,
I will check those sites out as well, thanks for the information.  I had a findmypast subscription a couple of years ago, but unfortunately, I didn't know about his Boer War past at the time.  Might be time to sign up again and have another look!
