Lizdb  Thanking you again for your help, yes we are on right track all census you have given is them.
Mary with son is the one I am tracing,as family story told was John Burton was left on doorstep of Burton family?  Research I have done 1891 Census showed Mary as head with a son called Thomas Charles Burton
born 1874 Heathfield. Who is his father?
I have a photo of a old house I think could be where Burton family lived at Slaughtern Ghyll Jarvis Brook
Crowborough definitely Crowborough was their residence. My thoughts were Bodle Street but I may be wrong.   Regards Glenys

It looks as of Mary may have had another illegitimate child, Thomas

Here she is in 1881, looks like she has secured a position as housekeeper and was able to take Thomas with her.

Tollgate, Hailsham
Daniel Huggett widower 70 ironmonger and smith
Luther Huggett son 36
Mary Burton servant 50 housekeeper bn Heathfield
Thomas Burton 7 boarder bn Heathfield
Walter Pettit 16 blacksmith bn Ashburnham

You wont find the name of Thomas's father unless he is named on the birth cert or christening record.

(Shall I ask a mod to move this to the sussex board, as seems no link with Hampshire at all?)

Lizbd again thanks slowly making progress, living in Aust makes it harder to visualise the area
but I am hoping to solve the story.
Yes if it helps please move the posting.

Get his birth cert?

Jul/Aug/Sep 1873
Hailsham
Ref 2b. 73
Thomas Charles Burton

But my feeling is there will be no father named.
