what is the significance of this white tab from the shoulder
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 16:28 BST (UK) »
Please excuse my ignorance but this is a phot. of my grandfather William Travis who served in WW1 in the Oldham Pals[24th Man Regt]. His Medal Roll shows 12th Manchester Regiment No.57060

I would like to know what is the white tab hanging down from his shoulder. What is it called and what does it represent.

Also if anyone can tell me how to find out whether he was a prisoner in Germany in 1918. This fact was recorded in the Oldham Chronicle of 1918 when referring to the death of his brother Harry. None of the family are aware of this and would like to try and confirm it

Both Ancestry and FindMyPast have some record fragments for him, one of which states that he was a prisoner of war from 24 March 1918 to 11 November...

He seems to have re-enlisted on 15 January 1939 - TA perhaps?

Its a lanyard for a knife or similar.
If he was a PoW new records have been released on ICRC website ...international comittee of Red Cross.
They are free to access

You will need to scroll through until you find his record

Thank you all for replying to my enquiry.

I have found the prisoner of war list on http://grandeguerre.icrc.org/

I am having difficulty finding reference to him in FindMyPast or Ancestry advised by ShaunJ.

Can you please post the links for the information you provided eg.

I think the 1939 note says that he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

You may be able to get his records from MOD.
