Army, Irish Strret, Whitehaven, Cumberland
« on: Monday 11 August 14 08:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out about the army, stationed at Irish Street, Whitehaven. Two members of my family, young girls in their teens died from Pleurisy, on the certificate its called Pleurisy. Their father was a colour Sergeant in the Militia.

You will find the site of the Officers' House on the 1866 town plan (select on right) here http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=297357,517917

The Militia also had quarters at the old Catherine Mill (scroll down) http://www.whitehavenandwesternlakeland.co.uk/whitehaven/catherine-st.htm
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Possibly your army ancestor was based at what is now known as Barracks Mills which is on Catherine Street, Whitehaven? In the past it used to be the base for militia. Irish Street is parallel to Catherine Street and if the family lived in a dwelling at this end of the street it would just have been a walk across the street to Barracks Mill.

Do you know the approximate year of the deaths by any chance?

Attached are some photographs I have just taken which I trust may be of interest to you.

1. Barracks Mill memorial tablet
(with a short summary of the building's interest);

2. Barracks Mill Arch
(from in front of Barracks Mill looking towards the rear of the buildings on Irish Street. The archway seen in the photograph, known as Barracks Mill Arch, connects Irish Street and Catherine Street.

3. Barracks Mill, Catherine Street, Whitehaven
(since renamed as Catherine Mill when taken over by a Housing Association)

[See next post for another couple of photographs].

Good day tiawooster,

These two photographs are of one of the restored 'Saker' cannons which has been placed in position outside Barracks Mill (renamed Catherine Mill) by the Housing Association that owns the building. Photo No 4 shows the tablet on the side of the cannon and Photo No 5 shows the actual cannon with the Barracks Mill building behind. Perhaps your ancestor was in charge of this particular cannon?

I hope these may be of interest to you.

4. Memorial tablet on the cannon outside Barracks Mill, Whitehaven
(restored and relocated outside Barracks Mill in 2006)

5. 'Saker' cannon in front of Barracks Mill, Whitehaven

(remounted with timber recovered from the former Christ Church, Whitehaven)
