Royal Navy Mentioned in Dispatches
« on: Wednesday 13 August 14 12:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the reason my Father-in-law Edward Martin Phillips was mentioned in dispatches whilst serving on HMS Illustrious, all we know is it was awarded in 1942.
 Be grateful for any help.

My Father was also 'mentioned in dispatches' in WW1. I found the details on his Service Record and in the Ship's Log Book, - (available to Kew).

Do you have his Service Record?

Yes I do, but it only says Mentioned in Dispatches, it doesn't say what he did

You need to check out what HMS Illustrious was doing during 1942...

This Site has some details:

http://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/3258.html

But the actual Logbooks are probably at The National Archives in Kew.

I would guess "invasion of Diego Suarez" (Battle honours for the carrier)",
but it is one out of three operations -
you need to check the logbook.
