Glad to have you back Chris. :)

You should get notification of posts but in case you didn't opt for that, you can find this thread by using the 'search' facility with 'Coenen' or your own name or the Beginners' forum.

When you say mum was raised in a foster home, do you mean a children's home? Here are some addresses for  Cambridgeshire  http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/list/Cambridgeshire.shtml

You could perhaps contact Cambridgeshire archives to see if any records are available. They may also have school admission records.

Regards
Heywood

Hi Heywood
I have tried Cambridge local authority no record of her there they said it must have been a private foster home of which there were many - mum said there were about 8 of them
She seemed to know Fitzwilliam cake shop in Cambridge so may have been close to the city

That's a pity - I'm not sure how you would ever find a private arrangement.

There are the various documents you could purchase which may add some information you never know. This is, of course, assuming that they are connected to Violet but sometimes you just have to take a chance and see  :)

Mary J G Coenen's marriage in 1926

Nellie Coenen's marriage in 1944

Joseph M Coenen's death Peterborough 1956

There are several births etc in Peterborough for the Coenen name which do not seem to be connected so Joseph is more of a speculation. On the other hand his name and age fit!

Hi

i realise these posts are nearly a year old, but i have read them with immense interest. I myself am a Coenen! I have recently started to research the Coenen family tree, and if it is the right strand, then i will be able to take you back to the 1500's.

but before we go far back - did you obtain Nellies birth certificate?

I think Nellie was my husbands aunty - or half aunty. Robert FW Coenen, who you refer to above was his father. did you get the birth certificate, for that will tell us if there is a real connection.

G :)

Thank you for all this. My mother Violet Mary Coenen or Mary Violet Coenen has NO birth certificate traceable in the IK. She was abandoned as a young child aged between 7 and 11  in a hotel in London, she said, possibly Euston area. Her father was Joseph David Coenen and by 1942 Mary’s marriage certificate says he was “deceased”. No idea of Mother’s name . Mary NEVER talked about her life. Except brought up in a Foster home in Cambridge (almost definitely a Private one) and trained to be a nurse probably in Cambridge then in Oxford just before WW2. Served in Acland Nursing home and Southend and probably Addenbrookes. Never ANY mention of ANY siblings. Canada mentioned occasionally as possibly either where she came from or was going to be sent to ior where her mother went to or came from. My father tried every avenue to find a birth certificate in UK - nothing ...
