completed with thanks - James Butler - County Inspector
« on: Monday 18 August 14 14:05 BST (UK) »
A marriage notice in an Australian newspaper in July 1894, for Mary Bulter in Goulburn, NSW, stated she was the grand daughter of the late County Inspector Butler, R.I.C., King's Co. and niece of Captain Butler. Her father was Tobias Butler born c 1840 at Shinrone (this is as appears in death certificate) to James Butler and Bridget Brown. Tobias married Eliza Beggs in Queen's County prior to leaving for Australia.
The Captain Butler mentioned in the notice - could he also be in the R.I.C. or would this title be more military?
I looked online at Rootsireland for a marriage for Tobias's parents or his birth/baptism.
I have looked at Ancestry site for the Royal Irish Constabulary but not sure if James Butler is listed as there is not much detail in the record - more of an index.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated :)

Hi Suzee

Shinrone is on the Offaly / Tipperary border !

So,

I have found the baptism of Tobias Butler to James Butler and Bridget Brown in 1840 in Nenagh Roman Catholic Church.

Nenagh is the nearest 'big town' to Shinrone.

So, the baptism is on rootsireland which is a pay per view site and will cost approx. 4 euro.

You will get a transcription of the church record.

James is listed on his death as esq. of Shinrone

So

I can only presume that this is him on the GV

Do you have a subscription to findmypast.ie ?

There are some newspaper articles on it re Sub Inspector Butler, mainly involving his policing of the area.

Tobias Butler had a brother called William Henry Butler b 1833 Tipperary.

I'm wondering is this the Captain Butler whom you referred to ?

Hi Tara
Wow! thank you for all the information you sent plus the location of Shinrone. I will now revisit rootsireland for Tobias' certificate. I do have a subscription to findmypast so will check out the newspapers. Also the link for the will. Once again thank you.
Regards
Suzanne  :)
