Nuname / Vuname Cottage
« on: Monday 18 August 14 14:31 BST (UK) »
Hello,

My parents have just started to live in Nuname cottage (number 25, The Street) in Crookham village.  And they wanted to know more information on the cottage and previous occupants.

It is a Grade II listed cottage but on the English Heritage website it is named a Vuname Cottage.

I've tried searching for it on all the census but have had no luck....

Does anyone have any ideas?  I've hit a bit of a brickwall.

Also interested in what the name of the cottage could mean.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Terri

Hi Terri

Using the census, you can walk The Street.

RG13 1101 32 page 14
Mrs Helena Ayres (38) is with her husband James (36) running the Black Horse pub
Daughters Lily(9) & Nora(5).
Before 1911, James dies, Lily leaves/dies.

1891 they are also the young Licensed Victuallers RG12 953 132 page13
(page12 westwards, page 14 eastwards, Gally Hill page17)

(1901) Grove Farm and Cross Farm are itemised, as is the Hall.
Page 15 onwards is walking westwards.
(1881) Black Horse is being run by Thomas(64) and Jane(62) Knight both born Farnham
(1871) Black Horse is Thomas(59) and Jane(57) Knight  RG10 1230 79 p25

(1881) and 1891 the Ayres family live very close to the pub

You can fix the pub therefore in 5 census books.
[and blacksmiths and grocer(?) and baker(?) and farms owners(?) ]
Make a rough map and drop the names and any details you find.

I don't suppose that you will lucky that quickly but it may be a start
You will certainly have a map of how that part of the village changed over those 40 years.

Do you have this? . . . . . http://www.sevenspots.co.uk/building/grove-vuname-crookham-village/
