1901 & 1911 Census
« on: Thursday 21 August 14 12:05 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Does anyone know if there was a specific map that was used for the census in Co. Derry.  I would like to work out where my ancestors lived and am trying to work out how they worked out the ''house numbers" in specific townlands.

Ciaran
Keenan (Co. Antrim Ireland - Scotland)
McCart (Co. Antrim Ireland - Scotland)
McMullan (Ballymoney Co. Antrim)
Westwood (Kingswinford)
Bray (Colwell, Herefordshire)
Stanley (London)
Moss-Smith (Altrincham and surrounds)

I'm afraid there isn't a "map", it was down to the individual enumerator's discretion.

The only clues you have are information in the return relating to, for example, rooms, windows in front and outbuildings.

Hi,
Gaffy is correct. In 1901 my grandfather's farmhouse was No42 and in 1911 it was N0.8. His brother also lived on a farm in the same area and in 1901 his farmhouse was No.1 and in 1911 was No.14

The numbers are NOT house numbers they are census form numbers. The numbers usually only match the house number in large towns and cities.
Houses didn't have numbers in rural areas.

Check out his neighbours and than check out the area on Griffith's Valuation map
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=placeSearch
of course if he's in Griffith's your grand if not do you know his father or his mother's name (if she was widowed at the time) or could he have married into the farm, so his wife's father or mother.

Between the census records (1901 and 1911), Griffith's Valuation maps and the Valuation Revision books (www.proni.gov.uk) you should be able to track the property from c1930 to mid 1850s.
