Daniel Kelly of Derry
« on: Wednesday 29 June 05 11:55 BST (UK) »
I am not very hopefully on gathering any new info on this ancestor but I have already been amazed by the results this Fantastic page has returned for me so I will put this out for those that love a challenge.
I think 'my' Daniel Kelly arrived in Port Phillip, Australia in July 1841 on board the "England"  aged 29, along with a brother named Thomas Kelly aged 22.  both men were listed as labourers from Derry.
The ship has sailed from Liverpool.    The 2 men had succeeded in missing 3 census for 1841, Ireland, England and Australia.
He married a Mary Bastable in November 1849 at Hotspur, the marriage was registered at Portland Victoria Australia.   There is no mention of age, parents of places of birth for either parties on the marriage cert I have purchased.   There is a son born in August 1851, and possibly 2 more (girls) that may have been Daniel Kelly's offspring.  The births were not registered.  The first of Mary's children registered is in 1859, with the father being another man.   This union was de factor, never legalised, and Daniel dissappeared.
I have searched Victoria's, New south Wales South Aust and Queenslands records for a possible match, unsuccessfully.
There are a few Daniel Kelly's that left for New Zealand (and other places) that may fit.
Does anyone have either a Daniel or Thomas Kelly that has about 10 years in Victoria that is a bit vague on details?

Good morning Abygail,

Not much has happened on this board. I suggest you post this message on the Derry (Londonderry) board where the posters are excellent at helping people. Alternatively drop a line to Sarah who specialises  in moving messages from one board to another. No one will lose you. She leaves a message here letting people know where the message may be found.

Best Wishes, Christopher

Thank you Christoper, I'll give it a try and see what information turns up.    Although I think he was from Derry, he may well have lived in England for some time prior to migrating to Australia.
