There aren't any Joan or Mabel Smith's with the date of birth you gave in the death index for 1988 or any other year.

The nearest is Joan Smith born 22 June 1917 died 1988 in Birkenhead.

You say that your mum's mum used to be Amelia Hobson,so shouldn't her sister Kathleen also have the same mum with a maiden name of Hobson?

This looks like a brother too? The T as a second name may stand for Tivendale.
