Hi Jan
Thanks for your reply.
I seem to be getting a bit lost with this family tree at the  moment, so i'll give you all the details I have got.
My grandfather Arthur Jarvis Forster married Ellen Wright Aug. 1 1897 in Oxford which gives Charles Wright has her father. the only Charles Wright I found was born in Oxford about 1817 who married Mary Ann Newman in 1850 at Warwick. Hope this helps.
many thanks
pete

Hi Pete

Looking at your other threads I think you have probably found the right Charles Wright - does his occupation of box/trunk maker/dealer tally with Ellen's father on her marriage to Arthur? is Ellen's birthplace after marriage Oxford?

Mary Ann nee Newman does seem confused as to where she was born Oxford/Calne ??? One of mine changes his birth place from census to census but at least he remains within a couple of miles. There is a Mary Ann Newman 5 in Bremhill (near Calne) in 1841 but with a Mary Newman 25 Ag lab and Emily 2. In 1851 this Mary Ann is working away from home as a servant. A Mary Newman 38 farm servant unmarried and Emily 12 are in Calne Workhouse - so looks as if Mary Ann could have been illegitimate and George Newman as father on marriage probably fictitious (might be her grandfather's name or father's first name).

Hi Jan
Many thanks again for your reply.
Charles Wright was listed as a labourer on Ellens marriage cert.,but was listed as a box maker on his marriage to Mary Ann Newman.
Hope this makes sense.
many thanks
pete

Hmm Labourer not very helpful then! Does Ellen give her birthplace in 1901 as Oxford?

Jan ;)

Oh I see he was a labourer in 1891 so that looks good and from your old thread I can see she was born Oxford. I can't find another Ellen born Oxford with father Charles. I think you are on the right track and the Mary Ann Newman who married Charles is the one born near Calne c 1836, mother Mary Newman unmarried.

Betty Wright? Although still formerly Newman? That is strange. Although that said that Mary Ann could have been known as Betty - my mother in law has always  been known by a name which is neither of her official ones. encouragingly I can't see anyone called Betty Wright with husband Charles living in Oxford. I still think you are on the right track.

Glad you are re-inspired Pete. Libraries and records offices often have a subscription to Ancestry which would give you free access to census records etc. Also worth checking out Freecen, Freereg, FreeBMD and FamilySearch.
If you need any more help just shout.

Happy hunting
Jan ;)
