Jeffcock Hobson
« on: Wednesday 29 June 05 17:46 BST (UK) »
I don't know whether anyone else out there is trying to do the same, but I am attempting to find out what the connection is that ties together the Jeffcock and the Hobson families.

So far I have found around 50 individuals dating as far back as 1819 with some still surviving today.  There are various rumours within the family that it was a wealthy Jeffcock female who married a Hobson male and it was a condition of her will that anybody inheriting from her must have Jeffcock within their name.  The Hobson family have a long history of being miners in particular around Sheffield.  This is where I have found most of the Jeffcock Hobsons so far.

Does anyone have any more information or insight into this intriguing mystery?

Barbara

Hi there Barbara
I don't know if we have spoken before about our Jeffcock connections.
I am related to the Jeffcock name through my ggg grandparents Charles and Amelia Jeffcock.

:) Thought one of you might be, with it being such a one off name.....seems like between both those websites you know quite a lot already!  Wish I had unusual names to trace instead of such widespread (common!!) ones  ::)

Silly as it may seem you know its not that easy to find these elusive Jeffcocks. I thought too with such an uncommon name it was going to be easy.
My 3 x great grandfather was born in 1829 and I have yet to find his birth registry. I have been at this since I was 17 and I am 40 this year .... aaaagghhh!
Trouble is until I find his birth then I cannot prove my theory on his parents. On every entry but one he is listed as Charles Jeffcock born Sheffield. Then on the 1861 census he is listed as Charles Walker and born Hunshelf Bank. My theory is that he was illegitimate but that his parents later marry. My reasoning for this is because as well as the entry on the 1861 census it is also around this time that he christens his children Jeffcock Walker.
The plot thickens!

Thanks

I wondered if you had gotten any further with the Jeffcock Hobson line you were tracing?

I was speaking to someone recently regarding the connection who may have more information.
How do I contact you please off of here by email.

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, we have progressed a fair way now.  We have been in touch with quite a few people and think we have pinned down where the Jeffcock Hobson line began and how many of the individuals fit together in families.  However, we still have quite a few "floaters".

My E-mail address is bh@dpts.co.uk.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Barbara
