Alfred Hagerty Cheshire Regiment Uniform Help
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 20:37 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone this is my first time posting on here and am hoping someone can help me.  This is a picture of my great granddad who was in the Cheshire regiment.  What I am struggling with is identifying the actual uniform.  His stripes are upside down and he has a cane which someone has mentioned may be linked to a PT Instructor.  Can anyone help?

Hi Rudolf, thanks very much for the info.  Says he is a private but isnt this a strange uniform for a private?

No, correct uniform for WW1 period.  The chevrons above his left cuff are good conduct badges, and not symbols of rank.  An expert will tell you how many years they represent, but I feel they mean he must have been a pre-war soldier.
The cane under his arm was known as a swagger stick and used when off duty and out on the town, not part of uniform but widely carried, especially in peacetime.

Good evening,

His long service and good conduct stripes were given for 2yrs, 6yrs and 12yrs service. His next would be 18yrs, 24yrs etc. The maximum was 10 stripes but I doubt that many qualified. They were only worn by corporals and below, sgt and above did not wear them. It is unusual to see someone with 3 and no rank.

The uniform has no pleats on the breast pockets so this is around 1915/1916.

That number would have been issued during WW1. So he did his twelve years as a Regular, was discharged then re-enlisted. His first set of papers may be on Findmypast.

When was he born? And have you found him in 1911?

The Cheshire Regiment have volunteers who do research for £10-15. You should ask what records they have before paying. He has no medal ribbons so did not serve in the Boer War.

If you post your pic on the Free Photo  restoration and dating board they will remove the creases from your photo, they are extremely good.
