So the George Barnsley I found earlier as a shoemaker's apprentice may not be the same George who is a schoolmaster in 1851?

However, Geoff noting the shoemaking trade in Northampton may be significant as perhaps this is where George went to work as a shoemaker, but then changed occupation. At age 18 (or even earlier) I would have expected George to be a pupil teacher in 1841 if he then went on to become a schoolmaster.  :-\ Stranger things have happened though ....

A little odd that George and Ann married in West Derby with no obvious links to the area.

I meant to add earlier that English death certificates generally don't give a great deal of information.

This should help:
http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/deaths.htm

In cases such as the death of the Thomas you think may be yours, it will give his age and occupation (if known by the informant) which should help you decide if he is your Thomas or some other random Thomas Barnsley, or perhaps an infant Thomas Barnsley.

So, worth buying, especially in this case, but don't expect too much information ....

I don't think they existed in 1841, and even less likely when George would have left school in the 1830s.  :-\
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Very polite form letter from GRO stating no death certificate and money returned. So another dead end? Free BMD found him so why can't the GRO?

Hi

What exactly did you put on the order? You have to order a certificate as it is registered, the death is registered as

TOM BARNSLEY, Penrith Reg Dist March Qtr 1838 Vol 25 Page 108.

It has also been indexed on FreeBMD as page 100 but to me it looks to be 108.

Andy

I can't remember exactly but I put the name, the year and the place. They told me that they did a search either side of the year and had no success.

Perhaps you filled in the form incorrectly? If you enter exact details they don't normally search either side of a specified year.  :-\

I think you should try again giving the details Andy has given you. You have to fill names etc exactly as written in the index.

I may be doing them a disservice, but I'm not sure I trust the searches they (say they) do either side of a year either. I think they are open to human error. I am willing to be corrected on that and hope I am wrong.
