Help Tracing Irish Presbyterian Ministers
« on: Friday 05 September 14 11:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone advise please.  I have a marriage in Glasgow, Scotland in 1855
by James Mitchell, (from the Church of Scotland Fasti- James Mitchell, min of Irish Presbyterian Church, adm to CoS ..in 1846.) I have contacted the Irish Pres. Church, but they said they had no James Mitchell that would fit this discription.

On the marriage cert. I have James Smith baptized 3 Jan 1831 in Tyrone .
His wife was born Newry- with no bapt. details.

This has been a wall for us for over 14 years. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Janette Smith

You seem to be assuming that James Mitchell might have been from Co. Tyrone because James Millar (married 1855) was also from there but you'll need to read back through the earlier thread and do more research in Scottish records as was suggested (if you haven't done so already).

Until the opening of Union Theological College in Belfast in 1853, there was nowhere in Ireland for Presbyterian Ministers to study and qualify. (Trinity wouldn't accept them).  Therefore they nearly all obtained degrees in Scotland. Consequently the Rev Mitchell is very likely to have qualified in Scotland. It might be worth contacting Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen & St Andrews Universities to see if they any record of him attending and matriculating there, pre 1846. If they do, it often contains a little background information on the student.

Thanks for that.

These Smiths have been my greatest bug-bear, I'm no further back with them than I was the very first day I started. Husband thinks I'm doing it on purpose.  :)

I've tried to trace the minister because, perhaps I'm wrong, I thought it unusual that the fact that he was an Irish Presbyterian Minister was mentioned in the Fasti. He was accepted as a missionary in the CoS in 1850.

I'm up to date with the family down from the time of the marriage  and I did find a sister for James, but can't seem to make the link with Ireland.  Neither appear to be in the 1841 or 51 census.

My hope is that  James's father might have come over with them and died in Scotland. (as he was still alive in 1857 according to the daughter's marraige cert.)  I've more time to spend now, so I'll get back to trawling every Smith since 1855!

Thanks again

Janette

There's really nothing unusual about a Presbyterian minister from Ulster moving to a church in Scotland- I can think of many examples where this happened.
