It says he was the 6th engineer, and that he was killed by the engines on 2nd July 1913.

Sounds like he was ships crew rather than a passenger.

Hi Carol- that would make complete sense as he is shown on the 1911 census as and Engine Fitter Apprentice- how sad :(

Thank you once again for all your help! i am still trying to locate his sister martha Kate Varney- born 1897 and with her mother in Sunninghill in 1945 when she died- have tried various spellings through BMD to find a marriage or death but no luck as yet.

Wow- that is truly amazing now to have a picture of the Montreal Ship!!!! I am quite overwhelmed- and very grateful to you all! Bertram Varney was a half brother to my husband's late grandfather- so he is thrilled to have seen this information. Thank you all very very much! We had no idea of this story at all until today! x

In terms of looking for Martha, have you checked the electoral roll for that Sunningdale address to see if she stayed around after mum died?

Presumably she was the only person left to inherit the house and mum's money?

Oh how awful!  This newspaper report says that Bertram fell into the crank pit and was crushed to death. (scroll down the badly digitised text).

Oh no!! This story of poor Bertram is just awful- I cannot bear to think of it! The story is very sad- his mother gave birth to an illiegitimate son when she was very young- and handed the son over to grandparents to bring up. To then lose her second son to this dreadful fate does not bear thinking about. the only consolation is that her third child-her daughter martha Kate was there for her at the very end of her life- all very sad :(
I did not expect the story to be like this-but thank you all so very much for the xtent of detail you have found.
I only hope that her daughter Martha had a better life but would love to know how she and her mother came to be living at such an upmarket address in 1945!
