1841 -91 Scottish censuses M(a)cdonald
« on: Wednesday 29 June 05 22:50 BST (UK) »
Could anyone who has access to the above censuses please tell me if they know anything of Roderick M(a)cdonald, born 1840 at Fairy Bridge in the Duinirish/Kilmuir area of Skye? At some point he went to school in Glasgow, then was a teacher at Lonmore for a couple of years, and then went to Glasgow and Edinburgh universities. His father Angus was a crofter, and his mother was Elizabeth McNeil.

Thanks for that, Debbie. Presumably Lachlan and Margaret are unmarried siblings of Angus? I'm just a bit worried that Angus isn't listed as a crofter, but it may well be them.

Thanks again.

The online index doesn't give relationships unfortunately. You would be best to consult the original available on microfilm from your local LDS library.
I wouldn't worry too much about the occupation being a bit different.  They were tough times in the 1840's in the Western Isles.  Lots of jobs were lost, and people displaced due to economic woes.  A lot of folks left Skye around this time for the Mainland, and Australia.

Have a good look through the McDonald entries in the 1841 index, there may be other family members there.
