Portlaw, Waterford
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 13:54 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for information on Maggie Goulden/Golden born in Portlaw in 1865. She must have left in the early 1880's as in 1883 she is marrying in Ashton under Lyne, Lancs to John Higgins whose parents came from Boyle, Co Roscommon. She may have had a sister called Mary born 1871 who also moves to Ashton eventually to live with Maggie and her family.

Many thanks

Alison

Hi, I think that is looking very likely, I believe a mill in Portlaw was closed down about that time due to high cost of transporting the cotton to Liverpool so it would appear the whole family moved to work in the cotton mill in Ashton. Many thanks for your help, much appreciated

I had a look on RootsIreland.
The surname as I expected is causing some difficulty, my first thought on seeing Goulden is it's probably Gouldine.
There could be two couples of James and Ellen or they could have reused James if the first died but anyway this is what I found
Port law RC
Parents James and Ellen
Patrick Golden 1862
Margaret Golden 1863
John Goulding 1866
Mary Goulding 1868
Ellen Gouldine 1870
James Golden 1872
James Goulden 1874
Rosa Gouldine 1879
That doesn't quite match the Census of 1881 but these are transcribed records so errors are common.
As several of the children were born after 1864 it should be possible to find birth Certs for them and that way find their mothers surname.
