Trying to find 1st wife of John Ashton
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 20:27 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for some advice as to how I move forwards with my research into the life of my g-g-grandfather John Ashton. When he married my g-g-grandmother in 1828 he stated that he was a widower. At this time he lived in Louth in Lincolnshire. On the 1841 census in Louth,he stated that he was not from that county and unfortunately he died in 1844 so i have not really got much lead as to where he was born so cannot assume that he married his first wife in Louth. Does anyone have any advice to give me as to how I could possibly proceed with this brickwall. Sorry for the rambling post but would really appreciate any help that anyone could give me as to how to move forwards with this.

It might be a wild goose chase but have you looked at other 'Ashtons' living in Louth of a similar age to see where they where born if not in Lincolnshire.  They could be siblings of John.

Hi Rosie
Thanks for the reply. My problem is that I have only got the 1841 census to go on. I have looked at Ashtons in Louth but unfortunately there appear to be very many of them, so really like looking for a needle in a haystack. The only tenuous link I have is that on the 1841 census there is a Mildred Ashton listed with John and his family. I purchased her marriage certificate and it stated that her father's name was William Ashton and that he was an ironmonger. I was wondering if in fact William may have been a brother of John's. That is the sum total of what i have to work with.
Thanks again. Angelgirl

Thanks Rosie
That is very helpful. So now I need to try and find out when and where Sarah and John married. But at least I am one step nearer than i thought I was going to get.
Thanks again for your help Rosie. i really appreciate it.
