William Roe of Snelston
« on: Tuesday 16 September 14 08:48 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for the parents of William Roe born in Snelston in 1797. There are two christenings mentioned of a William in Sept and Oct of that year with parents Thomas and Mary and also Elizabeth and Samuel, is there anyway of finding out which parents my William has. He married Maria Severn on the 23 Dec 1817, any help much appreciated.

Unfortunately, no easy way to solve this.

Most of online trees say Thomas Roe and Margaret Stubbs and I would tend to agree as William/Maria named no son Samuel (common practice to name a child after father) and I note they had a son Michael as did Thomas and Margaret in 1804.

Sorry can't be of more help.

Hi, I too think it is probably Thomas and Mary although may never be able to say with any certainty, many thanks for your interest,

I would search out the original record for the 1817 marriage. You may be lucky and find a witness with a name of a relative that you can link only to one of the Williams

On familysearch there is a burial of a William Roe in Snelston 19 Oct 1797, maybe if you can check the PRs it might give an age, it would at least rule out William of Thomas & Mary. It's probably another William but always worth tracing as much as you can.

Also you could try tracing both Thomas and Samuel through census and marriage / burial records, might just throw up a clue - there are some entries on the 1841 census which might be relevant.
