Dad's family name was Coles so I guessed at the "o" but it could be an "a".

Ah, of course, Coles it is then :-[

Yes I agree, does look like Wharton: Caherc ... something

It looks like 199 St George's Square, but since that doesn't exist (in Pimlico anyway as far as I can tell) do you think it might be 19a?

Thank you so much for your suggestions; I will follow them up.  I had one 2nd great grand uncle, Charles Dobb who lived in London in 1891 (on census) but most relatives were born and lived all their lives in Devon.
Charles was born in Devon (father James and mother Mary Ann Venn). He had 5 sons so it might be two of them in the photo. Charles was a carpenter.
From 1901 -1911 the family lived Willesden, Middlesex.  Jenny.

Hi Maddys52.  It could well be an "a" as the letters are difficult to read.  In the 1891 census I have a relative  and family who had moved from Devon to live in Chelsea, London but most of the family were born and stayed in Devon.  jenny.

On this webpage there is a similar label from Marks & Co - towards the bottom of the page. http://www.machadoink.com/John%20Bateman.htm

I haven't been able to find out anything on Marks & Co or when they were in business at 36 St Thomas Road Hackney. There are no people of that name at that address in the censuses.

There are a Miss Emily Coles aged 21 from Devon, and also a Miss Mary Coles from Cork aged 19, in the 1901 census at 81 St George's Square Pimlico. Both maids.

Thank you for reseaching that Shaun.  I have also hit a brick wall.  Not sure I will ever find out who the two young boys were but it was worth trying. I have looked at the other Coles  family members and cannot see an obvious link. Thanks again for your help.  Jenny.

Hi Shaun It happened again ; as I was replying you found some more information.

Emily married but only had one daughter (I could find) and Mary died in 1912 without marrying.  The two boys may have been from the family they were working for.  That would make sense.  Jenny.
