237 High st.,Hackney c.1934
« on: Sunday 21 September 14 02:46 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

Please can anyone out there tell me what the building was at 237 High st/. Hackney in 1934.
A relative was born at this address acc. to his birth certificate and we know it wasn't the home address. I have googled and see that the area is obviously all redeveloped now.

Many thanks

Looks like it could be Hackney Hospital?

1935 Electoral Roll has house numbers (evens) to 228, and then a few pages of people in Hackney Hospital

Brilliant, thank you so much for that information and all the help you give. I thought it may possibly be the case but couldn't
be sure and there's no family left to ask.

Have a look at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Hackney/

What had been Hackney Workhouse & Infirmiary became, in 1930, Hackney Hospital.
It was located on Homerton High Street, Hackney.

Because of the stigma attached to these Workhouse Infirmiaries, they often used a house numbered address on certificates and official documents!

Thank you, I guess using numbers instead of the name on certificates would make sense and certainly be more palatable for the people concerned.
