Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette Tyne and Wear, England ... be natives of Sunderland, Joseph Oxberry (26), a miner, and Mary Ellen Kennedy (25).

There is a marriage of a Mary Ellen Thompson to William W Kennedy -

q2 1934, Sunderland Vol 10a Page 1303/1503

So it would appear that Mary Ellen was married before she married your ggrandfather.
