WW1 German POW camp records availability
« on: Friday 26 September 14 23:49 BST (UK) »
Did the German's keep admin/prisoner records for their WW1 POW camps

I'm interested in two camps,  first is Hirson which was based in France near Berry-au-bac, the other one is Dulmen nr Munster Germany.

I know from service records and Red Cross index/documents that hubbies gt unlce pte Francis Greedy was captured at Berry-au-bac on the 27th May 1918 the Red Cross have him listed as a prisoner at Hirson France on the 11 Aug 1918,  then he's listed as a prisoner in Dulmen on the 11th and 20th of September 1918,  His service record he was repat to the British 30th Nov, and then Red Cross confirms he reached Dover on the 1st Dec 1918.

Does anybody know if Admin/prisoner records exist and if they do which Archives is best to approach to ask for research the information for me

There used to be some prisoner of war reports to download from the National Archives at Kew

I found what little I know from his service records and the ICRC website. I hope there are more in depth details to be found on his time actually in the camps, perhaps why he was moved, if he ever tried to escape etc, but even if there isn't, at least I've filled in the gaps re. his whereabouts between Chemin des Dames and Münster II.
