First Receiver of Customs
« on: Saturday 27 September 14 03:53 BST (UK) »
In a death notice for Henry Gardner in 1845 it says "many years first receiver of Customs, in the Long Room, London".

Where would I find out about this occupation?  Would there be any records to look at?

Hi
Try googling 'receiver, in the long room'

all sorts of information pops up, and might be a pointer to answer your query.

When I tried this, it appears the receiver - general of the custom house, had clerks in the long room within the custom house.

What an interesting occupation.

Hi,
I googled ' first receiver, in long room' and got many hits. It may be you will find exactly what you are looking for that way.

It appears that there was a long room in the customs house where the clerks worked.

What an interesting occupation the first receiver had.

The Long Room was the term used by Customs & Excise to describe their main public office, where ships agents and members of the public could transact business. See:

Try National Archives for Customs records.
