Please can anyone tell me if Portugal, in particular the Azores, did any censuses in the early 1800s and if so where you find them?

As far as I can tell, no.  (There may have been statistical censuses, but there does not seem to have been anything genealogically useful).

A "census alternate" record may be confession lists, but I am not sure how far back they would go:
