You say he was born North Shields not Newcastle.  I often tell folk I was born Newcastle as they do not know where Morpeth is but understand if I tell them Newcastle.  Maybe he just chose the city as a lot of folk did not know where NS was.

Just a thought

Jac

I agree Jac.  Especially when the vessel had people from many different counties on it,  so to the  master, born in Lancashire,  Tyneside might well be regarded as Newcastle. (Apolgies to other Tynesiders - I even know where North Shields becomes Tynemouth  :D)

A few thoughts from me  :)

- don't think he had a middle name

That doesn't mean he didn't have one  :)

- born north shields not Newcastle

Agree 100% with what Gadget and Jac have said

- I haven't found any evidence that he was a sailor.  His marriage certificate (1901) states he was a fireman (though I do acknowledge this could have been on a boat), and his death (1915) that he was a former general labourer.

He could well have been a fireman on a ship.
He could have stopped working on ships and become a 'general labourer' after that.
Or his wife might not have known how to describe his occupation and opted for general labourer to cover all possibilities.

If he was a patient in the Asylum in 1911 the name would  only have been written as initials.
Have you checked to see if there is an 'R. D.' who fits?

Agree, Jennifer   :), particularly if he had been suffering from general paralysis* (? of the insane) for 8 years.

* would this also be more prevalent amongst mariners?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback, think I need to see if I can find any other evidence of him being a sailor to tidy this loose end up !

JenB - I have been through the 1911 census for the workhouse in Morpeth, which I am currently trying to confirm whether it was the asylum.  Interestingly they actually have full names not just the initials on the census!

Gadget - you are right, I have visited Robinson Dunn before and got his death certificate etc (part of a bigger mystery surrounding my great grandparents!)......just trying to tidy up some loose ends I haven't looked at for a while....can't believe its been 3 years though !

Thanks guys !

I cannot find Appleby Street on the 1911 census (find my past)

Go to the 1911 search page.

In 'Address' enter Appleby Street
In 'Registration District' enter Tynemouth.

Or for the exact address you mention above enter 22 Appleby Street to get the residents of that house.

I tried to search like this and it doesn't bring up the 1911 census just the 1901 census.  This census is quite interesting as I haven't noticed before that living at the address given on Robinson Dunns death certificate (my great grandmothers first husband) is my great grandfathers (the 2nd husband) brother, wife and children !!!  My great grandmother ended up having children with my great grandfather before her first husband (Robinson) died........  what tangled webs we weave :-)

As I said in my posting, you must use the 1911 search page  :)
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/1911-census-for-england-and-wales

I have just double-checked and following the instructions I gave yesterday definitely brings up Appleby Street, North Shields in 1911.

I think perhaps you were using the general 'Census Land and Surveys' page

In which case you are not looking at Morpeth Asylum: they only have initials for the inmates, as I said yesterday.

On the 1911 search page enter the initials R christian name box and D in the surname box, select the registration district Morpeth (nothing else is needed) and that will get you into the pages for the asylum.

Hi again

I agree with Jennifer about both searches. Yesterday~

I found Appleby Street on the 1911 and also No. 22.

I checked up and found there were person(s) with the relevant initials at the asylum.
