Help Deciphering Marriage Certificate Please
« on: Thursday 09 October 14 18:28 BST (UK) »
Hello all, this is my first post and I hope you can help.

Attached is a marriage certificate for my Great Grandparents Arthur Lewis and Ella Symons. The marriage took place in Midsomer Norton, but that's as far as my skills have got me.

Could you please help me identify the following:

1. Arthur Lewis middle name? I think it might be Leslie.
2. Arthur Lewis profession? Could this be Carpenter or Engineer?
3. Arthur Lewis Father's first name? It looks like Henry or Harry
4. Arthur Lewis Father's profession?
5. Thomas Symons (Ella Symons Father) profession? I think this says Auxiliary Postman

Many Thanks in advance.

Chris

Welcome Chris :)

Arthur Leslie Lewis was an engineer, son of Henry, a miner.

I agree with auxiliary postman for the bride's father's occupation.

You're welcome  :)  You may already have the following:

Ella Irene Symons born 25 April 1907 was baptised on 9 May 1907 at St James, Devonport.

Parents: Thomas (a blacksmith in the Royal Navy) and Laura, of 64 Admiralty St, Keyham.

The name Woodland is also entered and crossed out in the baptism register, so they may well be the Thomas Symons (28) & Laura Woodland (26) who married at Stoke Damerel on 24 Nov 1906.

Shout if you'd like further details.

I knew that Ella Symons was born in Devonport, but did not have the Baptism details.

Thomas' connection to the Navy is also new to me, as is Laura's maiden name.

The information you've provided has been a big help.

Again, very much appreciated.

Can you advise what date the Symons family were living at 64 Admiralty Street? I have them living at 74 Hamilton Street on the 1911 Census.

You will have seen that there were only five months between the marriage in November and Ella's birth in April (this isn't all that unusual in family history, as you probably know).
