France help
« on: Friday 17 October 14 10:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out some information regarding a member of the French High Commission. His name was Robert Leconte. All I know is that he married what would have been my father's great aunt in New York City in 1920. I'm looking to see if he had children or if he returned back to France with her. The wife's name was Dorothy Armstrong formerly Dorothy Chapman daughter to Harry and Mary Chapman. I do not know date of birth but the date of the wedding I believe is Dec 27, 1920.

From some of the immigration records, he and Dorothy naturalised in 1930 which to me would indicate a plan to stay there:
e.g. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-21841-1365-37?cc=1923888

Also, this record in 1926 gives his father's name and address, as well as Robert's birthplace
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-21487-26505-37?cc=1923888
A LeConte, 2 Rue de Pontoise, Vaux sur Seine, France.

He is listed as born Paris, previously in the US between 1917 and 1925. She is listed as born Manchester.

I think they may have both died in Florida:
Dorothy: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VVXN-VWH
Robert Antoine LeConte: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VVXN-VWH

A reference here puts a Robert Antoine LeConte in 1917 moved to reserves "mission des Etats-Unis":

A 1906 reference I think to him receiving some sort of scholarship for schooling (in Grenoble?)

Yes, she was born in the early 1890's and came over with her mom and father in the late 1890s. They settled in the New York City.

Thank you, based on a quick search looks like Vaux sur Siene is a really nice area. I've only been in the city and rode the train from CDG into the city.

Any idea what he did with the High Commission? I'm assuming a diplomat but that's just a guess.

On http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/ I think he can be found arriving into NY the first time, in 1917.

On the "La Touraine" which he arrived on  he is one of a number of French Army officers, all stamped "diplomat" (an immigration status rather than a job description) who are heading for the French consulate in NY.

I do not think he was a career diplomat, on the same site you can see Robert and Dorothy arriving back in NY in 1921, he is by that stage listed as an engineer with no diplomatic connections mentioned.

Thank you quite much, based on this records it does not appear they ever had children or at least never traveled with them.

Since no children appear with them on the census, either, I would agree that they didn't have any surviving children (possibly there were kids who died young, though).

From some of the French records on Robert, his father was an architect and there were three children; if you'd like I could see if I can find his siblings.
