Food for thought?

Often posters are advised to scan at higher resolution, say 300 ppi, as apparent res'n is showing as 72 or 96 ppi.  Even if poster has scanned at high res'n, software being used by restorers may indicate 72 or 96 ppi which is the default res for web pics and monitors.   Hence indicated res'n isn't always a true reflection of original scan ppi and rescanning, regardless of resolution setting, may result in the same indicated 72 or 96.

Yes Morrie I have found this happens sometimes too...Others have said the scan shows at 72dpi when my software shows 300dpi...it is very random...this one is showing as 72dpi in my software too...but it sometimes is due to the way the OP reduces the file to post below 500kb.

Thanks for that hint Morrie - I have to say mine sometimes shows differently from what others are saying and I can't work it out at all - but this time . . . . . .

Cienna,

To clarify could i ask two important questions please.
1) What is the size of the ORIGINAL physical photo
2) What do you want from the restore
  a) An image for viewing on monitors and tablets etc
  b) Printed and if so what size?

These are key to how you sacn.
Pixels are everything.
Higher compression is better than less pixels.
Pixels give better detail.

Best I can do without making it look 'unreal'.
