Thank you all again.
I'd already followed Maria Harriet and children through to their respective conclusions. One son is my grandfather. If great-grandfather Theophilus finished up in a lunatic asylum, then oh!dear. But it still doesn't explain why I can't find his death record.

Thank you, Ambly. At least the Births, Deaths & Marriages people got the surnames right.
Similar to the Cork/Cook problem was the one I encountered with my mother's paternal side. Olliver quite often came out as Oliver.

Another newspaper mention - in the Maidstone Telegraph of 22 January 1870: a man gave himself up to police at Tunbridge after deserting his family in Hastings on 3rd January. He identified himself as Thomas Cork, 39 a shoemaker, according to the paper.
