I would be grateful if you could tell me where I could find, or search for, copies of birth and marriage and death certificates in Scotland please as I haven't a clue :(

Thank you Elwin - off to check it out now :)

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions- we were all beginners once and new resources are constantly coming online  :)

For Scottish certificates you need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, register (free) then start searching. If you find an item you wish to view you'll need to purchase credits. Lots of helpful information there and there's a topic here on Rootschat with lots of hints-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=562668.0

Also check out stickied topics on the SCOTLAND GENERAL (scroll down under the county listings)-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=84.0

There's also lots of links here under SCOTLAND RESOURCES (and the individual county boards also have lots of links)- http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=367.0

And now, if you aren't totally overwhelmed...
1856 marriage records give full name, age, marital status, occupation, usual residence, date and place of marriage, name and occupation of father, name and maiden name of mother, and names of witnesses and the officiating clergy.

1856 birth records - child (date, place and time of birth, full name, sex), the parents' names (including maiden surname of mother), father's occupation, name of informant and relationship to child. Unfortunately it wasn't until 1861 that parents' date & place of marriage was re-instated (as on births in 1855)

details included on death certificates-

Adhagdowey - brilliant set of links thank you.  I'll grab my credit card and get searching now :)

Don't rush, just take you time using different searches before using any credits  :)

For reference-
Marriage (1856): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMV-BMD

Children:
Charles (1856) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ54-D61
Mary Ann (1858) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQHR-ZF8
William (1859) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ53-R6P
Hugh (1861) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F74G-LYD
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Once again, thank you very much aghadowey.  Scotlandspeople was a mine of information, some of which contradicted Find my Past's census info.  Hey, the detective work continues :)

when you go on to the site I gave you the donegal site if you come down the page to a green box with a heading Search this website then below that is a box and it says Google Custom Search that is were you put your surname, townland, shoemakers.etc.

If you come down the page of the left hand side you will see Kiteevoge (click on this)
Carolan mention in this parish.

Thank you once again Rathmore - I followed your directions, found the box and the mention of Carolan in the Kiteevoge area :)

Now I'll try the Slaters directory, but I'm beginning to think that there are far too many Carolans without a bit more information.  If only I could find his death certificate it might give me a few more clues, but I can't even find that :(  Though I know he died in Scotland.

Hi Andy

I haven't done any family history research for some time, but on tidying up my filing I came across your post to me dated 9th November 2014.  I just wondered if you had got any further with tracing William Carolan in Ireland.  As I may have told you, I went to Donegal to a Family History Centre, but they could find no trace of him.

Hope you had more luck.

Regards
Lilibet
