Thomas & Florence Coulson - Cathays Terrace Cardiff - 1912 and onwards
« on: Sunday 26 October 14 10:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello people,

I am looking for info on Thomas Coulson and his wife Florence, originally of South Shields Cty Durham, apparently migrated to Cardiff 1912. Resident at Cathays Terrace Cardiff in 1912. They had a daughter Elizabeth Sanderson Coulson born 1893.

Specifically, I am curious as to...
* Middle names for Thomas and Florence, if such names exist.
* Other children in the family, if exist.
* Death dates - whether they stayed in Wales or returned to South Shields (or...).
* Marriage of Elizabeth.

This is a wide-ranging query. Apologies if I am asking too much.
If anyone can direct me to any online BMD resource for Cardiff,
I will be happy to explore further on my own if that is preferred.

Thanks
David C

from their marriage reg on FreeBmd, there are these middle names given

Thomas Smith Coulson & Florence Mary Doyle june qtr 1891 South Shields vol 10a pg 1134.

Florence is on the 1901 census as Mary F Coulson. RG13/4699 folio 30 pg 8
Have you looked for them on the 1911 census? We can't do that for you as it infringes copyright.

What info do you have that places the family in Cardiff in 1912? There's a possible second marriage for Thomas in 1908
Thomas Smith Coulson march qtr 1908 Sunderland vol 10a pg 955 to Dorothy Jane Glenwright

There isn't a separate BMD for Cardiff or Glamorgan, so it's a case of using FreeBmd. There's a possible marriage registered at Cardiff sep qtr 1914 vol 11a pg 729 For Elizabeth Coulson & Thomas Howcroft & 4 children registered to the couple between 1916 & 1922. I won't post their names in case they are still living, but they are easy enough to find with Coulson as mother's maiden name.

possible death regs working from age of 34 given on the 1901 census
Thomas S Coulson 47 june qtr 1916 Sunderland vol 10a pg 805
Thomas S Coulson 67 dec qtr 1932 South Shields vol 10a pg 822

Thanks to Osprey for checking.

Perhaps I should have given more detail on this family.
I already have census data on them for 1911 (and earlier) in South Shields.
There are a number of Thomas Smith Coulsons in the Durham area,
all of them I have come across before, all easily confused with the man I am tracing.

The evidence for a migration to Cardiff comes from a 'coincidence' of names that I don't think is a real coincidence.

Elizabeth Sanderson Coulson was christened in 1912 in Cardiff, as an adult.
Her parents were Thomas & Florence Coulson.

This perfectly matches a family living in South Shields in 1911.

I have a theory that Thomas and family migrated to Cardiff to join Thomas's cousin or brother Joseph Coulson who migrated there circa 1895.

Middle names for Thomas and Florence in Cardiff would test the theory.

Furthermore, any data for the family while it lived in Wales would help clarify the connection it has with the family of Joseph Coulson, if any.

I've looked on the free index for the 1911 census & there is an Elizabeth Coulson aged 17 born South Shields living in the Cardiff registration district. There is no other Coulson in the same household as her.

Also, there's a Thomas Smith Coulson aged 44 & born South Shields in the Llandilofawr registration district. The only other Coulson in the house is a 14 year old Thomas Smith Coulson.

The GRO index doesn't show middle names from around 1910ish until 1969 so doesn't help in matching records.

The Elizabeth who married Thomas Howcroft was a daughter of Joseph.
