Joseph and Rachel Pratt of Pittington
« on: Tuesday 28 October 14 14:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?

I have a Joseph and Rachel Pratt living at Shadforth and Pittington in the mid to late 1700's. They had the following children baptised at Pittington:

Mary Pratt b October 1759, bapt 10 August 1760

Jane Pratt b 8 July 1764, bapt August 1765

Rachel Pratt b 8 July 1764, bapt August 1765

Major Pratt bapt 7 August 1766

?? Joseph Pratt b 1758

The only record I can find for a marriage of a Joseph Pratt to a Rachel is that on 5 December 1753 at Berwick upon Tweed Northumberland, and if so they may also have had another son Joseph Pratt baptised 15 September 1755 at Holy Island?

There is a Joseph Pratt dying 1786 at Shadforth although no age is given, and a Rachel Pratt dying at Gateshead in 1817 (says birth 1721?).

I feel there may be a connection with the name Major Pratt in someway? A Major Pratt is down as owning land at Shadforth (says he is from Berwick Upon Tweed) in 1761 and the land is occupied by a Joseph Pratt?

There is also the record for a marriage of a Major Pratt to Mary Stewart in 1743, says he is of Berwick upon Tweed (born circa 1718) and she was of Bishopwearmouth (born circa 1717). I can find two children from this marriage:

David Pratt bapt 10 June 1744 Berwick

Margaret Pratt bapt 18 August 1745 Berwick

I believe Major Pratt born 1718 was the Commissioner for Customs at Berwick but cannot find a link to him and the family at Shadforth and Pittington?

Any help with any of the above much appreciated! :D

Hi

Here is a copy of Major Pratt's Will, who left everything to his son David and wife Mary.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12050-247477-98?cc=2358715&wc=9PQL-LB7:1078425860

His son David married in August 1777, and it looks like he died in the October 1777 without making a Will.

Probate: 3 February 1778
Further probate: 31 December 1824
     "          "       25 April 1856
     "          "       17 December 1857

letter of request, 19 November 1824
request from Durham to the magistrates of Edinburgh to take oath
certificate of oath, 21 December 1824
reply from the magistrates of Edinburgh to Durham
certificate of oath of estate value, 31 December 1824
administration bond, penal sum £6,000, 31 December 1824
administration bond, penal sum £6,000, 8 March 1856
administration bond, penal sum £6,000, 11 September 1856.
administration granted on17 Dec 1857 to William Lowrey and Robert Crossman, executors of John Pratt,  the goods having been left unadministered by William Pratt the elder and Mary Norris widow  (the widow of David Pratt). John Pratt was the residuary legatee of William Pratt the younger, who was in turn the son and sole executor of William Pratt the elder. William Pratt the elder was the uncle and administrator of David Pratt.

Hope this makes sense  :)

Hi

It looks like the father of Major Pratt could be a William Pratt who died 1743, this could be his Will

I still can't find any link to Joseph  :-\

Hi

Just had another look at the Will of William Pratt (1743) .... I must be blind !! There is a mention of a son Joseph alongside Major Pratt. They must have been brothers  :)

There was also the mention of a daughter Mary Pratt in the Will, here is her baptism

Mary Pratt bap. 11 Feb 1722/23 St Aidan's Bamburgh. Father: William, abode: Warenton.
Notes: Mister William.

I can't find the rest of them though ~ William, John, MAJOR, JOSEPH, Mary and Matthew.

Hi Claire,
Many thanks for all your help and guidance! I think I found the burials for William Pratt and his wife Jane at Belford Northumberland:

William Pratt buried 18 November 1742 age 63

Jane Pratt buried 30 December 1767 age 71

Also possible baptisms of children?:

Mary Pratt baptised 11 February 1723 Bamburgh

John Pratt baptised 28 September 1731 Berwick

Elizabeth Pratt baptised 11 December 1735 Berwick

Elias (Ellis?) baptised 9 October 1735 Berwick

Matthew Pratt baptised 3 June 1712 Simonburn

(Cant find a baptism yet for Major Pratt or Joseph Pratt).

I think William Pratt was baptised 7 December 1675 at Berwick, son of an Ellis Pratt and his wife Ann.

Thanks for all you help once again! :D
