Question - English Counties Cheshire & Lancashire
« on: Saturday 02 July 05 02:06 BST (UK) »
I live in the USA, and I don't understand the county/parish, etc. system in the English census records.

Why is Stockport sometimes listed as Cheshire County, and sometimes listed as Lancashire County?  Some records show Stockport, Cheshire Lancashire.  Why both in same record?

As Stockport grew in size in the early C19th it absorbed surrounding parishes which were across the county border and originally in Lancashire.
