If the correct date is being retained, then it won't be a CMOS problem because, as you say, its all or nothing.

Thank you for your answer. My thoughts exactly.

Just in case its the issue, and depending on how techie you feel like being, have you checked the time settings in the BIOS to ensure there isn't an anomaly there?

It's the BIOS time that I have to change daily - the time that Windows shows only echoes that.
One other thought that I have had (if I ever manage to get the case open!) is to prise up the BIOS chip a little bit and press it back home again in case there is a lack of clean contact.

Hi

You can actually access the synchro clock?
[eg firewall not blocking it?]
What is it set to?

If you mean so-called Internet Time  aka an application accessing timeservers using the Network Time Protocol the answer was 'yes' without any problems with the firewall as stated earlier for three years. It is presently turned off. I can only add that the problem started just over a fortnight ago.

The problem reared its ugly head just before the clock change. I'll read the article from M$. Thanks

The article/updates were dated as 2009 so would have been covered by Win7 Service
Pack 1 etc. I am assiduous in updating so think I'm safe in that aspect too.

Mr Google has just found me a reference to a similar problem with  an Asus laptop (suspect my mobo is Asus)  but the Knowledge Base number is wrong so I'll investigate that further.

Thanks again.

Hi

Win7SP1 was 2011 (?)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2981580

2981580 August 2014 cumulative time zone update for Windows operating systems

* 02.45am is around the "normal" time for updates ? 1 failed? Anything on logs?
* You would expect a fix prior to a major timepoint (in this respect DST) ?

* You said that you hadn't had the m/c turned on for some time . . . . ?

Just trying to help . . . . . .

Yep, got that one. Installed successfully Aug 13th. The other one I quoted where I had the wrong KB no. was Sept 2014 KB2998527. Again successfully installed 25th September. a singleton that I'd completely forgotten about and now looking suspect. Have to see what tonight's updates bring but might have to uninstall that one if the problem is not cured.

I always install manually at times when I can keep an eye on things. No failures that haven't been sorted. The box is on 16 hrs a day, every day. I ought to leave it off for 36/48 hrs to see if the calendar is affected too but can't do without it on.  ::)

Thanks for your input Ray.

Hi All,
An update on my problem with the computer system clock re-setting itself which I now seem to have cured. :)

My set up is that I have an 8-way socket connected to a normal wall mains socket between all my kit and the power. The 8-way is switched and supposedly surge protected. After shutting everything down for the night I would switch off the Master Switch to isolate it all.

Prior to the cure I had found that if the Computers power supply was left on the date problem didn't arise. Consquently the PSU has remained on for the last three months. I found a couple of days ago that if after shutting the computer down I disconnected the PSU by pulling the plug from the 8-way, then switching it to 'Off', no problems occurred either if reconnection was done in the precise reverse order. So it must be the act of operating the Master Switch that is the cause and likely to be  interaction with the surge protection circuitry.

I have now re-arranged my mains connections now so the computer PSU has its own mains wall socket and the problem seems solved.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread and I hope it is of help to someone else in trouble.
