Conway Workhouse Records - admissions
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody know where I can obtain records of admissions of persons to Conway Workhouse? I have contacted Conwy Archives but although they hold extensive records they do not have any records of persons admitted to the workhouse.

I have found a burial record in Gyffin of a lady who fits the frame for my ggg-grandmother but sadly this particular lady's last address was the Conway Workhouse.

Any help will be gratefully received.

They probably no longer exist?!

www.workhouses.org.uk/Conway/  only shows Minute books and letter books?

This is what I suspected, if the Conwy Archives did not have any admission books then it was unlikely that any one else had them.

Thanks for the link.

Hi Ellen,

She was buried on 6 March 1880 at Gyffin Church. Her name was Jane Williams aged 79. She may have been buried with her husband James Williams who was buried at the same church some 22 years earlier.

Hi Gog,

I found a Jane Williams born 1802 Llanfairfechan on the 1871 Census living at Tan Y Bwlch, Gyffin it states she is an Ag Lab widow living off the parish. Going back to the 1861 Census she is living with her husband James who was born 1802 Dwygyfylchi, living at Pen Y Bwlch, Gyffin with their 4 children. Could this be the same family? Bearing in mind the Census didn't always state the right birth year.
Another root you could go down is, as Jane is living off the parish the Archive may have a list of paupers in receipt of weekly relief.
Conwy library have booklets with buriel & memorial inscriptions for a number of the churches in the area these can be quite good for collecting information and there may be mention of James & Jane. If you can't go let me know and I will go and have a look to see if I can find them for you.

Kind Regards,

Ellen

Hi Ellen

Thank you for the census information. I had already followed her and the family through to 1871 but she goes missing after that and I cant find her with any of her children in 1881. Jane was my maternal ggg grandmother and she was Jane Davies before she married James Williams in Dwygyfylchi on 15 May 1829. I have found their marriage in the parish records.

They did live at Tan and Pen y Bwlch which are situated just off the Sychnant Pass Road on the Conwy side just before the narrow wall section near Pensychnant.

Your advice on going to Conwy library and also the paupers list at the archives are a coup and much appreciated. I live local so will call in when I can and see what they have.

Diolch yn fawr
Gareth
