Oploper
« on: Thursday 13 November 14 22:14 GMT (UK) »
In a Dutch document a man's Occupation is shown as Oploper. I cannot find a translation in any dictionary, can anyone tell me what he did.
Many thanks

Can you show us a scan of the relevant part?

Could it be Koploper = leader?

A seamen's mate - someone who assists sailors http://vocseavoyagers.nationaalarchief.nl/UitlegFunctie.aspx

Here's an example http://www.gahetna.nl/en/collectie/index/nt00344/d76ddcd4-1bbb-4313-b547-b73ba5da5fc3

Helpers van de Matrozen = helpers of the sailors.

Is this just "mate" in English I wonder?

KGerrad I have posted a file of the document .

The problem with that is that it isn't a copy of the original document, it's a transcription?

When in doubt over a word, always go to the original, hand-written, document!

Not that it matters now - problem sorted! ;D

KGarrad, As I have said I am knew to Dutch records if dealing with English records I would always try to look at the original documents but cannot justify a trip to the Netherlands to look at originals
