you can do a free birth search at the Scotlands People website but everyone has to pay to view the exact entry.

There is just the one birth showing up for Andrew Proven in 1912 - presumably you have already discovered this? It only costs £7 for 30 credits and if you have Scottish ancestors you will need credits to purchase the appropriate certificates to progress further anyway.
Whereabouts in Scotland was Andrew born?

It's believed he was born in Leith.

That one result is coming up a Edinburgh City which should fit in with a birth in Leith I think.
