Ripponden / Soyland , David and Sarah Shaw
« on: Tuesday 18 November 14 10:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi

These were my ggg grandparents.

David and Sarah Shaw nee Whiteley eventually had family who settled in Rochdale Lancashire.

Their son Joseph was my gg grandfather.  I know they had links to Beestonhurst / Hanging Lee, and other names.  They have linbks to Booth, Lees and other Whiteley family but I'm struggling to find for certain where David originated as these are such common in the area.  I would love to find the births for these.

I have details from the wonderful Calderdale companion and later certificates.  I'm also short of many burials still.

Any ideas where to look?  I have some entries from Ancestry.

Best wishes

Hi Emms,
I have several Shaws and Whiteleys from the Ripponden area jncluding a Joseph Shaw b1843. I also have ancestors linked to Beestonhurst but on a different line. Perhaps you can give some dates.

Hi David

I think you may have helped me out before but I'm just starting again really going into David and Sarah.

David must have been born about 1896, and Sarah about 1800 - just extrapolating from other documents, probably close to Ripponden.  They married in Rochdale, but later generations returned to the Ripponden/ Soyland area.  Their first  (I think), child John claime d on the census to have been born at Windy Bank, on Blackstone Edge.  Blackstone Edge is where my Dad said the family farmed.

I'll dig out some more details.

Best wishes

Hi Emms
My Lightowlers seem to have been in pretty much the same places as your Shaws. I have found that my lot used 3 different places for BMDs = Rochdale, Elland and Huddersfield as well as having some burials at Littleborough and Ripponden.
I found lots of information at Halifax library, particularly in the acquisition transaction books. There is also a lot on the 'Lancashire on line parish clerk project' website. You could also look at the book  'History of the Parish of Littleborough' by Henry Fishwick on Google which contains an history of Windy Bank chapter.

Hi

Thank you Dave

I'll have a look at those.  I keep looking at the registers online but I know they keep updating.  The problem with such common names, especially as they keep intermarrying and repeating names for cousins is you're never sure you've got the right ones.

I know there was an Elland link in an earlier generation, and also to a Shaw's mill up there.

Thank you again.

Best wishes

Wow, brilliant photo!

I've seen a few older, much tinier, less detailed ones.

I've always wondered if it meant the main house or a cottage nearby, or if David could have been a farm labourer living in.  Or could they have been the poor relations?

The other fascinating thing is, I've just found two photo's in the recent Ripponden book, of Hanging Lee and Ripponden, one of which from the date may even have my family outside.  I know it's a local and a date thing, and the design is different, but the style has so much in common, and my family did do some building.  Some of them were stone masons.

Thank you very much!

Best wishes
