BRADLEY on ships list 1852-61
« on: Tuesday 18 November 14 19:02 GMT (UK) »
:D Hi, I'm trying to find my G.Grandfathers family on a ships list coming back from...I assume Adelaide to England between 1852-61.
James BRADLEY (Mariner) + Sarah BRADLEY (Seamstress) & daughter Agnes Eliza BRADLEY
(born Adelaide on 9th Nov 1852.)
They are back in London by 1861 and had only been in Australia for a few years.
N.B. This Bradley family is elsewhere under Blake1.
Cheers Ken.
??? I can find people going out to Oz but not coming back.

Think the UK incoming lists starts from 1878-1960

The State Library of South Australia has no departure lists from SA to overseas countries only interstate and NZ to 1859.

Have you searched TROVE digitised newspapers for their departure.  Occasionally the departing passengers are listed.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper

Most unusual not to have mother's maiden name on a birth registration in South Australia.

Birth
BRADLEY Eliza Agnes
11 Sep 1852
Father James BRADLEY  Mother Sarah (not recorded)
Birth place not recorded    Ade 4/79

Have you considered James may have worked his/their passage back to England?

Where and when were Eliza's siblings born?

 ;D Many thanks to all,
Sarah's maiden name was Sarah GOWER, Agnes was their first born and the only one born in Oz.
James went out on the "Childe Harold" 1849. But don't know if he was crew or passenger and can find no reason for him to go... but I think there was a gold rush?

Sarah Gower went out on the Barque Tory arriving 27 Aug 1850 with other seamstresses.

;) Good idea...I'll search Trove for departing dates and passenger lists.
:D :D :D we need one of these little faces with a light bulb over it for good ideas.
I don't know how to find out if they worked their passage.
Kind regards Ken

:D Hi, I have been told from Australia but not where to find details.
James Bradley, Sarah and child returned home to England onboard "STAMBOUL" 26th Aug 1854
but cannot find any details myself and have no-way of contacting informant. :-\
also I know James & Sarah married at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide on 8-Nov-1851
(Dis; ade. Book 4, page 353, Vol 4) and I'm wondering what's on the churches original document.
Perhaps parents names and witnesses. I think Sarah had a sister Eliza who stayed in Oz.
James & Sarah's parents are my 40 year, brick-wall.
I think James's father was Joseph George Bradley...Joseph's 1st wife & James's mother?
Sarah's parents? I'll carry on digging away.
:-[ Sorry if this search has deviated a bit...just clutching a straws and desperation here.
Thank you for your patience. Ken

:D Hi Cando, thank you so much.
Taking your last post 1st...I have followed Eliza Gower & Charles Hydress line. He had a horse riding accident and died & Eliza became a prostitute, and later headed a petition for better working conditions!! Also at one time she was arrested for stealing a hat & a feather? (Ooo...ah) ...this family story ended as a very dark tale.

Ann Gower is a new one for me to research (I have just had a quick search and sadly think this is another family.) :-\

The lead on the Stamboul seemed too good to be true.  :(

??? I have possible parents for the Gower family but need proof from somewhere.
James's family were possible non-conformists and his father married twice but cannot find his first wife. (James' mother.)
Again many thanks. Ken
