Did you get the above info from the Ellis Island website?  Have you viewed the passenger list?

Did you notice that the Ellis Island site has 2 entries in 1947 for Ralph Davies?  Both aged 48, both British but each has a different passenger ID and ship number

 If you search here for Davis in Rotherham you will find this family (plus a younger sister Violet).

I think this the Ralph of the 1901 census deceased in WWI (parents listed as "Mr and Mrs T R Davis of Rotherham").

Geoff, are you looking for the Ralph Davis in 1901/1911? He's almost certainly the one who died in WWI - age, location, and father's initials all add up.
